Peas are known as garden peas and it is one of the popular vegetable crops in India. Generally, you can cultivate peas in green pods. How to Start Green Peas Farming in India

Green peas cultivation is very profitable for all Indian farmers; So we provide the necessary information about it. Green Peas Farming – Agro-climatic requirement

Agro-climatic conditions are very important while cultivating green peas. It determines the time of sowing the place in the crop circle. G-peas thrive best in cool and moist areas. The ideal temperature for the farming of g-peas is between 10°C to 30°C. Temperatures above 30 °C may result in poor yield. Cultivating g-peas requires a moisture content flower and pod development stage in the soil. An ideal rainfall of 500 mm is required for the growth of its crop.

Green Peas Farming – Soil Requirement

You can cultivate green peas in a wide variety of soils. However, farmers grow best in well-drained soils with a pH range of 6-8. The best organic matter with soil will result in good quality and the highest yield of peas. You can apply appropriate Farm Yard Manure at the time of land preparation. Before planting, find any deficient nutrient value in the soil.

Green Peas Farming – Sowing time and Method of Sowing

Before sowing, soak the pea seeds in water overnight, which results in better seed germination. Then, you can usually sow the green peas through dibbling and broadcasting methods. The Regions of cultivation are mainly decidable when sowing the peas.  

Sowing of the Rabi season crop usually starts from October to mid-November in India. It will be from mid-March to the end of May in the hills. Preference is given to sowing seeds during the first week of November to get a higher yield.

Green Peas Farming – Manures and Fertilisers

To enrich the soil and get a higher yield, apply 40 to 60 Cartload Farm Yard Manure (F.M.Y) per hectare @ soil or at the time of land preparation. Inorganic fertilisers such as: 45 kg ‘P’, 30 kg ‘N’, and 50 kg ‘K’ / ha.  You should give the fertilisers in divided doses (1/2 dose of ‘N’ or full dose of ‘P’ and ‘K’ at the time of sowing). The remaining 1/2 dose of ‘N’ is applied after one month of sowing the peas.

Irrigation Requirement

You should frequently irrigate in green peas farming. If there is a rainy season, you require low intervals of irrigation. However, you should irrigate each at an 8 to 10 days interval. Pulses crops generally require a higher water percentage than cereal crops. Therefore, irrigation is very important in green pea cultivation at the time of flowering and the stage of pod or grain development. In case of waterlogging, make sure the soil drains well.

Intercultural operations/Weed control

At about the 8 week stage, when the pea plants have started to spread, you must support the pea plant through bamboo sticks to avoid any loss in production. Since you should sow the peas in rows with closed spacing, it is difficult to control weeds mechanically. Therefore, using herbicides is the most suitable way to control weeds in pea cultivation. Propazine, Atrazine, and Cimazine @ 0.60 kg/acre gave good results in controlling weed pea seedlings. Prometrium 400 to 450 g/acre was most beneficial in improving the vegetative growth of plants and pod yield.

Harvesting of Green Peas

You should harvest the green peas pods for the duration of maturity. You should choose the time when the peas start changing the colour from dark to green. However, harvesting time depends on the variety of peas. You can harvest in 40 to 60 days for an early variety. Apart from this, late-season crops can be harvested in 100 days, and mid-season crops can be harvested in 75 days. Multiple pickling, you farmers should do the 4 to 5 picking within 2 to 10 days. 

The yield of Green Peas

The yield will always depend on agricultural management practises and the variety of seed cultivated. An average yield of 30- 40 quintals per hectare can be expected in early varieties, whereas like mid-season and late varieties, the yield will be higher at 45 to 60 quintals per hectare.
